It may have been ripping up a storm outside but we got cosy and crafty in the marquee with 150 girls who were all participating in the Billabong Girls day event.
The girls each got the chance to knot their very own Nalu bead bracelet, necklace or key ring, and we even threw in a free bead!
A North Devon surfer has won a modelling competition — beating off some 3,000 contestants. Nalu beads team rider Sophie Hellyer, 22, has recently won the World Sports Model 2009 competition. Sophie is currently ranked second in England at surfing and has previously been the English Junior and British Schools champion. As winner of the competition, Sophie has taken part in a fashion shoot and interview out in the current Health and Fitness magazine. The competition, which looks at health and athleticism was judged by Michelle Washington, owner of W Athletic modeling agency; Olympic swimmers Mark Foster and Sharon Davies; Pete Muir, editorial director of Men's Fitness; Mary Comber, editor of Health and Fitness Magazine; fitness model Jamie Eason and sports photographer, Vince Starr.

Young Nalu team rider Laura Crane, is 'down under' competing in THE QUIKSILVER ISA World Junior Championship which has kicked off in New Zealand — representing Great Britain. Laura is proudly flying the Devon flag as they take on the cream of the world's youth surfing talent in both team and individual competition. Laura just returned from South Africa where she put in some 'winter training' in the sunshine. The World Junior Champs are held at Piha Beach on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealnd, the spectacular surroundings is a most suitable setting for this amazing event. Aiming to improve on last year's team placing of 16th, Team GB, consisting of 12 stand-out juniors, who have been working hard. With the advantage of an early arrival, Laura and the team have had five days to train, surf the beach and get a feel for the waves prior to the comp.

Festival madness, you've gotta love it! Three days of tramping around, listening top your favouite bands. It's what summer was made for.
A couple of ocean loving art students Lisa Adams and Kerry Mansfield had been talking about working on a collaborative project for years. Then Kerry taught herself to make glass beads and Nalu Beads was formed. SurfGirl asked Lisa about their venture.
What was the inspiration for Nalu Beads?
Where we live is our inspiration....we are based in Croyde, North Devon, so surfing and the stunning coastline is not surprisingly a big influence. We share a love of the sea, although Kerry would rather paint it and I would rather be in it!
What was your aim?
We could see real potential in creating a credible piece of surf lifestyle jewellery. We wanted to offer an alternative to the mass produced, often unethically sourced jewellery sometimes found in seaside retail outlets.
Tell us a bit more about the beads?
Our first collection, the Break Bead collection, was based on the local breaks on the North Devon coastline. Now theres the Retro Bettys, The Islands and the Sticks, so you can choose your favourite break, board and heroine or your favourite colours and yes, they can be worn in the sea!
We are insisting on sustainable packaging as we want to have the least possible impact on the globe SO we have got together with some nice people from Atlas Packaging who are helping us to develop a box that is made from a material that is 100% recyclable, compostable and bio-degradable, it also has a minimum of 70% recycled content AND we're supporting a local company in doing so... thinking global, supporting local... its our favourite mantra right now! Lets all try it.
